Weather

It's 2300 hours (11 pm) Christmas Eve and I just checked Drive BC to see how what the road conditions are in Gold River since I plan on going home day after tomorrow. I might have to call up and see if the road is passable as here is the road report currently....
Muddy with slippery sections
Water pooling
Heavy Rain Fall
And of course that is for both directions in and out of Gold River ugh I don't like winter for a reason.

Mountains

I think the snow is beautiful as long as it stays where I want it to be and it can snow all it wants on the mountains just please not where I want to talk my car!!!!!

Winter Came

This is the first snow dump of the winter season. It came at the beginning of December.

Above is the view I get as I make a run for my car every day.

The Long House and yes the guys have been out working on it even in this weather. Yes we all think they are nuts as they don't use safety harnesses and it looks way to dangerous in dry weather let alone adding snow to the mix.
What our vehicles look like after a few hours of winter..........

We almost didn't make it home for lunch...
Below is the road out of Gold River a few days after the now fall...

More Ukee

Well Here are some more of the views we had and ohh yeah the weather was wonderful too.

Ukee

Well NTC just had one of the nursing quarterly meetings and this is the hotel and views we had to suffer with.... Anyone feel sorry for me yet???? Above is the front of the hotel
View from the second floor lounge area

This is an area right off of the main lobby. When storms come in the waves just rush this area.  You can't tell in the photos but the bottom of this little canyon is covered with seaweed.

Fall

Well I guess fall is coming. I took this photo a couple of weeks ago. Now the trees are more colourful, brighter yellows and reds. But with the changing colours a change in the weather came. We are getting a lot of fog and rain now. Monday there was even fresh snow on some of the mountains around Gold River.

I did go out to Zeballos, since I was told that there would be people there for me to see. Well I didn't have a lot to do as there was only two people in one community and one in the other, so I had a good flight, nice weather, nice walk what more could a person want other than people to see. Well winter is coming and as long as I can get in I should be able to see people while I am there.

Zeballos

Well we have had an aircraft and Marine warning for the Zeballos area. We are not to visit until further notice. Here is a picture of the "road" to Zeballos good luck getting in via road. It sounds like the town of Zeballos is looking at getting a barge from Victoria to bring in food to the area since they are basically cut off. There are of course people did get stuck out of the community and the others are stuck in the community. I guess I will play it by ear to see if I go out next week.

Egress Part 3

Now comes the start of the hard work. Getting into a lifeboat....Now there comes a point where a persons hands and limbs are to cold to get them selves into the lifeboat and here is how the people in the boat help....
Escaping from the "Plane" through a window....

here is the simulator that straps us to the seat of a plane....

Now you have to escape through the door, remembering to grab your life jacket on the way out.

Egress training part 2

Okay everyone in the water and now grab a life jacket. Now inflate the life jacket
Another group hug

A group hug while keeping someone afloat who is injured

Now get into lines an paddle to shore but only if the shore is close.

Are we having fun yet??????. the hard stuff we are still getting to.

Aviation Egress training PT 1

Look at all the crazy people who don't know what they signed up for. We are just learning some of the possible causes of a float plane crash.

Now we are at the pool in a group hug. Okay there is a reason for this....when wet (and in really cold water) staying warm is important and the more people together the warmer you are in theory...

The next two photos are of us learning about the apparatus's we are about to use in the water.

September 17, 2010

This week was kind of interesting at work. It started out on Monday with conservation officers on the reservation near Gold River when we got to work at 7:45 am. They ended up shooting 3 or 4 bears that have been a nuisance on the reservation for weeks now. I guess they finally did something after someone got "attacked". Apparently a bear hit a person who was fishing. There are still bears roaming the town of Gold River, there is also a cougar roaming the town as well. I have seen the bears, not the cougar (yet).

Tuesday, August 31, 2010

Well it's now the end of August and it is cold and raining. Well at least we can't complain about the fact we are dying of heat in our offices. We don't mind the cooler temperatures but what's with the rain? I guess we kind of need it for the forests as we did not get much rain to speak of over the summer and the forests are really dry. Now that the summer is over hopefully life will get back to more routine, not that it hasn't been routine for the summer. Once school is back in the pool will open again and I can get back to swimming 3-5 days a week. Hopefully we will get the walking program up and running that we wanted to do over the summer but with the high temperatures we didn't do more than a few times. Anyway I should get back to work.

August 16 2010

Well I started this blog almost a year ago. There are days in which I don't know why I stay and others that I can actually answer the question why stay?

Right now it is really quiet in the office as the camp-out is still happening and most people are not here (on reserve). I find that there are days that despite my best efforts I can't seem to get what I want to get done finished. Other days I can. Especially when trying to help people. Whether it's helping get equipment or just checking their vitals. I find that there is never enough thanks given to any of the nursing/ or support staff. Anyway I guess we do the job not expecting thank-yous but they are nice to get when people do recognize our work.

It has been 3 years since I started working for the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council as of August 7 2010. According to what some of the community members say, that is one year longer than the non-aboriginal nurses stay. Well someone had to prove their theory wrong. (that I would leave after 2 years). Some say I'm one of them.. who knows what others think of me. But do I care?.... Well kind of..... Anyway I can't please everyone. Anyway lets see what the next year has in store for the travelling I do on the west coast with this job.

Landing

Today I think was the worst landing I have experienced in 3 years of flying in and out of Zeballos. I was actually really scared. Wind blowing from 2 different directions at the same time actually makes for a very very very very very (get the point yet) difficult landing for the pilot and vvvveeeeeeeeerrrrrrryyyyyyy scary for passengers. I grabbed the sissy bar with white knuckles.

Clouds

People don't let nice white fluffy looking clouds fool you. They might look nice even from the air BUT...........
when you are in a very small air plane they cause some NASTY turbulence.

AIR

Views from the air.

industry

The two industries near Gold River is Fishing and Logging. Mainly Logging for Gold River and for the First Nations Fishing (at least for the moment)
